「五十三次名所図会」は、初代広重が晩年に手掛けた55枚の揃物で、安政2年(1855)に蔦屋吉蔵（紅英堂）から刊行されました。広重が描いた多くの東海道シリーズの中で唯一の大判竪絵で、通称「竪絵東海道」と呼ばれています。

見附宿は東海道の29番目の宿場で、現在の静岡県磐田市に位置し、天竜川の渡し船が大きな特徴でした。川幅が広く急流のため、舟で渡る必要がありました。旅人にとって難所でありながらも、天竜川の渡し舟は広重の作品に象徴される風景美を生み出しました。

確認されている一番早い摺り若しくは初摺であるこの一枚には、「廣」の字の隣の木の幹の輪郭が途絶えずに地面まで伸びていて、また中州の通り道の小石が一部白く描かれています。

"Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations" is a collection of 55 prints released by Hiroshige in his later years, and was published in 1855 by Tsutaya Kichizō (Kōeidō). It is commonly called "Tate-e Tôkaidô" (Vertical Tôkaidô or Upright Tôkaidô) because it is the only vertical large-format tate-e among the many Tôkaidô series that Hiroshige drew.

Mitsuke-juku was the 29th station on the Tokaidô Road, located in what is now Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was famous for its ferry boats across the Tenryû River. The river was wide and had a strong current, so crossing by boat was necessary. Although this posed a challenge for travelers, the Tenryû River ferry offered magnificent views, immortalized in Hiroshige's work.

This appears to be the first, or earliest state known of this print, with the outlines of the tree extending to the ground (unlike the other printings, and possibly added by hand) next to the red cartouche in the left bottom, and white pebbles along the travelers' path on the sandbar in the centre.

« Vues des sites célèbres des cinquante-trois stations » est une série de 55 estampes publiées en 1855 par Tsutaya Kichizô (Kôeidô). On l'appelle communément « Tate-e Tôkaidô » (Vertical Tôkaidô ou Upright Tôkaidô) car c'est le seul format tate-e (format vertical) grand format parmi les nombreuses séries du Tôkaidô dessinées par Hiroshige.

Mitsuke-juku était le 29e relais de la route du Tokaidô, situé dans l'actuelle ville d'Iwata, dans la préfecture de Shizuoka, et était réputé pour ses bacs sur la rivière Tenryû. Large et tumultueuse, la rivière nécessitait d'être traversée en bateau. Malgré les difficultés rencontrées par les voyageurs, les bacs de la Tenryû offraient un paysage magnifique, immortalisé dans les œuvres d'Hiroshige.

Premier tirage ou premier état connu de cette estampe, avec les contours de l'arbre près du cartouche rouge en bas à gauche allant jusqu'au sol (contrairement aux autres tirages, et possiblement rajouté à la main) et, au centre, des galets blancs sur le chemin emprunté par les voyageurs sur les bancs de sable.
